Scandinavian Art Weaves

Halvkrabba on the loom…

I swapped two of my jack looms in favor of a sweet little countermarche loom a while back.  The inspiration for this switch came from various classes taken at Vavstuga in Shelburne Falls, MA under the inspired tutelage of Becky Ashenden.  While it’s true that with enough determination, a good weaver can weave most kinds of cloth on just about any loom, it is also true that some looms are better suited than others to certain kinds of weaving.

The Scandinavian art weaves, such as opphamta, halvkrabba, krabbasnar, and others are just easier to weave on with very high tension and an overhead beater, features not usually found on the jack looms that are more common in the US.

This piece was the first one off my new loom.  The weaving does not go quickly, but it is immensely satisfying.  Since such pieces were often woven to celebrate family events, I wove my and my husband’s initials into this one with the year of our marriage.
