No Such Thing

A Whimisical Series of Artist’s Journals exploring the themes of Denial and Reality

When my son was small, one of his favorite stories was There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon, by Jack Kent. It is the story of a young boy who wakes up one morning to find a small dragon in his room. The grown ups in the story dismiss his claims as each day the dragon grows in size until it occupies the entire house with his head coming out from the front door and his tail from the rear. When they are finally forced to acknowledge the dragon’s existence, it once more shrinks to the size of small dog. The wise observation of the little boy is this: “I think he just wanted to be noticed.”

These journals were made as places where you can ruminate on your own inner realities and if you dare, to poke the boundaries of your own denial. To inspire you, and to remove the intimidation of the blank page, each section is wrapped with monoprinted papers with splashes, scrawls and colorful shadows. And the last page of the book opens up into a popup that reveals a unique dragon for your personal menagerie.
